Notes should read, Letter in French on the Gastinne Renette Fabrique d'Armes letterhead, dated Paris, May 2, 1850, and with signed autograph Gastinne Renette, presents insight into problems of gunmaking, involving color hardened finish. Renette states: "What happened with your pistols is not surprising and does happen often when one does not take the precaution to grease the barrels with a cloth for some ten days after the color has been fixed. This color which is an acid comes back for a few days. I forgot to warn you this time even though I always would do so when the barrels do not remain with me long enough, until the color has completed its effect. In reality one must grease the barrels with oil, let them sit like that for one day and then strongly wipe them with a cloth. The rust will then go away. Then for a few remaining days one has to wipe them with a slightly oiled cloth. In case, against my expectations, the color did not come back to its original state, please send the pistols back to me via the stage coach, and I will get the color back at my expense. I am sorry for this inconvenience which resulted from my forgetfulness..." (11/01/07)
