Additional provenance:
According to the consignor, he was present at the time Rudolf Hess was held in Spandau prison during the Nuremburg trials. The consignor befriended the warden of the prison, Colonel Burton Andrus and discussed the possibility of obtaining a portion of Hermann Goring's Grand Cross of the Iron Cross as a souvenir. He was informed that all military decorations would be returned to the next of kin. Goring subsequently committed suicide and others in the Nazi hierarchy were executed or received long prison sentences. Rudolf Hess was among the latter, eventually becoming the sole prisoner of Spandau. The consignor was unsuccessful in his attempt to secure a souvenir from Frau Goring but eventually Colonel Andrus called, informing him that Ilse Hess had been to the jail to remove all of her husband's belongings and the Colonel asked Frau Hess about the camera and she replied: "You have it!" [she only wished to have his clothes]. Afterward, the consignor asked the Colonel what he would take in trade for the camera and he replied: "I liked the bottle of brandy we shared a year or so ago..." With that, a deal was consumated for a case of Courvoisier cognac. Sold with notarized letter from consignor documenting his acquisition of the rare Leica which was believed to have been taken by Hess on his trip to Scotland, by which he hoped to make a separate peace with the Allies.
